IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Vileta
Foust
October 7, 1928 – February 9, 2024
Vileta Foust's faith became sight as she met her Savior face to face Friday, February 9, 2024.
Lovingly known to most as Granny or Mrs. Foust, Vileta Shoemaker Foust was born in Cullman
County, Alabama, on October 7, 1928, to Edgar and Hester Shoemaker. Vileta was a devoted
wife of 63 years to James Roscoe Foust, who passed away in 2010, and caring mother to three
boys – Jeffrey (Janice), Kendall (Teresa), and Neil (Tammy).
Mrs. Foust lived a humble, joyful life with a heart to serve others. A member of the Holly Pond
High School class of 1946, Vileta was double promoted and went on to serve as the librarian at
Holly Pond for 28 years. It was her dream to become a librarian, so after raising three children
she went to college to obtain a teaching degree and master's in library science. She began
working her dream job at age 41. It was in the library that Mrs. Foust made a lasting impression
on many people's lives. Her passion for reading and writing, her spunk, and contagious smile fill
the memories of students and teachers who visited the library. She had a way of making
everyone she encountered feel special and more important than herself. Anyone honored to
receive one of Granny's unexpected letters knows they showed up at just the right time. It is in these unrecognized moments that she left a legacy. Vileta was even rewarded for her sacrificial service and care for others with The Cullman Times' Unsung Hero Award.
Mrs. Foust was a committed member and Sunday School teacher at Walter Baptist Church.
Fittingly, her favorite hymn was "In the Garden." An admirer of God's creation, especially
flowers and gardening, Vileta's family is comforted knowing she is now enjoying the most
beautiful gardens with her Creator.
Vileta is preceded in death by her parents; husband, James Roscoe Foust; and grandson,
Matthew James Foust.
Those surviving Vileta includes her brother Richard "R.L." Shoemaker (Gladys); her three
children; six grandchildren; and 18 great grandchildren, 17 of which she was blessed to meet and one due in March; and a host of nieces and nephews, extended family, and friends.
The Foust family is thankful to Mrs. Diane Reynolds Stewart for her commitment of sitting with Mrs. Foust over the past three years, and to Mrs. Jenna Mayfield-Fox for her special support
and care for Granny.
The family will host a time of visitation on Monday, February 12, from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. at
Hanceville Funeral Home. Mrs. Foust's funeral services will be Tuesday, February 13, at 11 a.m.
at Walter Baptist Church. She will be laid to rest at Duck River Cemetery, where her grandsons
Nathan Foust (Samantha), Bradley Foust (Tina), Tracy Bird (Amanda), Christopher Wilder
(Rachel), Paul Mattox (Michelle), and Dawson Foust (Hailey) will serve as pallbearers.
