Obituary

A celebration of life for Donna Jo Butler, 69, of Cullman will be on Tuesday, October 6th at 6:00 P.M. at Hanceville Funeral Home. Officiating the celebration of life will be Gary Couch and Malcom Carter. A gathering will be held prior to the celebration of life at 5:00 P.M.

Donna was born on July 19th, 1957, in Cullman to her late parents. She passed away on October 1st, 2026.

Known as the “Brittle Lady,” Donna was well-known for her famed brittle. She found joy in making the brittle, as well as meeting people who came to buy it. Whoever came up to her brittle booth was never a stranger to her, and she greeted every customer with warmth and tenderness.

Before selling her brittle, Donna was employed by Nicholson File, as well as Mercedes-Benz. She was known to be very independent and enjoyed handling tasks by herself. Prior to her work, she was also a proud graduate of the 1975 batch at Hanceville High School.

In her free time, Donna enjoyed a plethora of activities. She loved riding Harley Davidson motorcycles with David, fishing, watching sunsets, and taking any chance to go on a trip. She especially loved going to the lake and beach with her family and spending time with them. She also enjoyed going to church and was a proud member of Temple Baptist Church.

Above all else, Donna loved her family. She loved her kids, grandkids, nieces, and nephews fiercely, and made sure to teach them valuable lessons such as learning how to fish. Rosie’s Cantina in Huntsville became a place of family tradition, and she would enjoy eating out with her family there.

Donna is survived by her husband, David H. Butler; children, Chris Putman, Kyle (Simret) Putman, Katie (Aaron) Birt, Kristi (Zac) Wood, Kelsie (Wesley) Mayfield; grandchildren, Zane Putman, Jace Putman, Kendra Putman, Reed Putman, Liya Putman, Cody (Makenzy) Hasenbein, Cooper Hasenbein, Brooklyn Birt, Ben Birt, Olivia Wood, Nick Wood, Alex Wood, Wilson Wood, Deklyn Mayfield; great-granddaughter, Maezy Hasenbein; siblings, Dedra (Chuck) Killough, Sandy (Gary) Chapman, Randy (Annette) Hollis, Joyce Dossey; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Donna was preceded in death by her parents, Gordon E. and Virginia Hollis.
